Netflix Anime: A Growing Force in Global Streaming Revenue
In 2023, anime represented 6% of worldwide streaming revenue, with North America contributing $2.2 billion (41% of anime’s streaming revenue) and Asia adding $1.6 billion (29%).
The latest Anime Industry Report reveals that anime generated a total of $19.8 billion (€91.01 billion) in global revenue, which includes $5.5 billion from streaming and $14.3 billion from merchandise sales. This report, enriched by data from Parrot Analytics and the Association of Japanese Animations (AJA), provides valuable insights into the global anime market for stakeholders.
Macoto Tezka, a renowned visual artist and filmmaker, and honorary director of The Osamu Tezuka Manga Museum, commented on the collaboration: “Anime is bigger than ever. Its record-breaking revenues and global influence continue to captivate audiences and inspire creativity worldwide. Douglas Montgomery, former Chairman of the Japan America Society of Southern California, added: “Anime significantly drives ancillary sectors such as consumer products, gaming, and live events, creating widespread economic effects. By leveraging these interconnected industries, the anime sector can unlock substantial economic potential and foster innovation beyond traditional media.”
In 2023, Japanese anime achieved unprecedented revenues, enhancing its cultural reach globally. North America and Asia together generated $14.3 billion, accounting for over 72% of anime’s global revenue. Anime’s contribution to global streaming revenue was 6%, with North America providing $2.2 billion and Asia $1.6 billion. Notably, anime generated over $2 billion in revenue for Netflix, underscoring its significance within the platform’s content library and constituting 38% of total anime streaming revenue. Additionally, anime led the merchandising sector, with Asia generating $5.46 billion and North America $4.97 billion, together making up 73% of global anime merchandise sales.
