Filmmaker Suneel Darshan Reflects on the Surprising Casting Journey of Jaanwar

Filmmaker Suneel Darshan recently shared insights into the unexpected casting process behind his 1999 blockbuster film Jaanwar, which marked a pivotal moment in Akshay Kumar’s career. In an interview with India Today, Darshan disclosed that Akshay was neither the first nor the second choice for the lead role.

Jaanwar was not written for Akshay,” he stated candidly. “The film was initially intended for Sunny Deol. We were almost ready to proceed when we encountered some serious disagreements. Those issues remain unresolved. So, I decided to move on and seek another actor.”

Ajay Devgn Almost Signed On, But ‘Sunday Changed Everything’

After parting ways with Sunny Deol, Darshan turned to another leading star of the era, Ajay Devgn. The two had even reached an agreement to collaborate.

“Ajay and I met on a Saturday and agreed on the film. We were set to finalize everything that Monday, but Sunday changed everything,” he recalled.

That Sunday, Darshan received an unexpected phone call that altered the trajectory of Jaanwar forever.

“It was from someone I had never met before—Akshay Kumar,” he revealed. “He was eager to meet right away. I invited him over, and he expressed his desire to be part of Jaanwar. He asked me, ‘Would you consider making the film with me?’”

Akshay Kumar Was at a Low Point in His Career, Says Darshan

Initially, Darshan hesitated to cast Akshay due to the actor’s declining box office performance at the time. However, something about Akshay’s determination resonated with him.

“Akshay was experiencing the toughest phase of his career then. But I thought, ‘Here’s a good-looking, disciplined actor willing to give 100% of himself.’ He even told me, ‘Sir, I will offer you 100% of myself.’ That stayed with me,” Darshan shared.

Despite knowing that Akshay’s name alone wouldn’t ensure commercial success at that moment, Darshan chose to trust his instincts.

“I realized I couldn’t profit from his name at that time, but I believed in my ability to unlock his potential. I felt we’d build a strong rapport—and that would translate on screen.”

Karisma Said Yes Instantly; Kajol Opted Out Due to Marriage Plans

The casting for the female lead also underwent several changes. Karisma Kapoor joined the project without hesitation. “She didn’t flinch. She just said, ‘Of course. Why not?’” Darshan recounted.

On the other hand, Kajol, who was initially set to star alongside then-boyfriend Ajay Devgn, had to withdraw due to personal commitments. Darshan mentioned that Tanuja, Kajol’s mother, informed him of this development.

“Tanuja ji called and let me know that it would be challenging for Kajol to participate in the film. I appreciated her honesty and professionalism,” he said.

Eventually, Shilpa Shetty was brought in to complete the cast, and the team moved forward with the new lineup.

Released in December 1999, Jaanwar not only achieved commercial success but also transformed how the industry and audiences viewed Akshay Kumar. The role enabled him to break free from his action-hero typecasting and significantly boosted his career.
