16 Years Later, a Supernatural Stars 26% RT Slasher Remake Finds Its Audience on Streaming

It’s been a full 16 years since Jason Voorhees picked up his machete and wielded pure terror and carnage at Camp Crystal Lake in Marcus Nispel’s 2009 Friday the 13th remake. Since then, fans have been waiting for the gears to grind on what will hopefully be another installment, but for now, the franchise ends with the Jared Padalecki-led, critically panned movie that saw the killer wreak havoc on a new group of unsuspecting 20-somethings. And, although it may be one of the least popular films in the slasher franchise, right now the title is finding massive streaming success in the U.S. where it stands alongside numerous other favorites on HBO Max’s Top 10.

With the spooky season in full swing, streaming subscribers are fully digging their heels into the vibes, with other favorites like Bring Her Back, Freddy vs. Jason, The Corpse Bride, and The Substance also taking over HBO Max’s sought-after list. In Nispel’s Friday the 13th, audiences follow along with a group of young adults who venture out into the woods for a weekend getaway at one of the member’s family cabins. Along the way, their paths cross with Clay Miller (Padalecki), a young man who is in the area searching for his missing sister, Whitney (Amanda Righetti), who vanished several weeks back while on a camping venture of her own.

At the time of its release, Friday the 13th was far from the only horror project on Padalecki’s docket. The movie came towards the early half of his long tenure on the hit CW series, Supernatural, and just a few years after his appearance alongside a slew of famous faces, including Paris Hilton and Chad Michael Murray, in House of Wax. In the years since, the actor has largely stuck to television roles, focusing on Supernatural, with Friday the 13th being the last time he appeared in a cinematic live-action role.

What’s Next for the ‘Friday the 13th’ Franchise?

News broke last week that filming had finally wrapped on a live-action prequel series set before the events of the original Friday the 13th. Titled Crystal Lake, the A24 and Peacock project introduces Linda Cardellini (Freaks and Geeks) as Jason’s mother, Pamela Voorhees, and showcases the years leading up to the hockey mask-wearing killer’s unfortunate drowning at the summer camp.

“There may be some talks about it with people that I know and my agency. If we could ever get everybody to get back on the same page and allow the things to work, I might be the next Voorhees.”

Head over to HBO Max now to stream Friday the 13th.
