Fionnuala Halligan has taken over from critic Kaleem Aftab, who resigned in March after a successful four-year tenure as the Director of International Programming for the Red Sea Festival.

The Red Sea Film Foundation Welcomes Fionnuala Halligan

The Red Sea Film Foundation is excited to announce the appointment of Fionnuala Halligan, the former Executive Editor and Chief Critic of Screen International, as the new Director of International Programmes. In this pivotal role, Halligan will collaborate with Antoine Khalife, the Director of Arab Programmes and Film Classics, to curate and enhance the festival’s expanding international offerings.

Extensive Experience in Film Criticism

Halligan has been an integral part of the festival for the last three editions of Arab Stars of Tomorrow, a collaborative initiative with Screen that showcases emerging talent from the region. With over a decade of experience as a film critic for the South China Morning Post in Hong Kong and five years as a consultant and programmer for the Macao International Film Festival, she brings a wealth of knowledge to her new position. Halligan is a respected figure in global film criticism, holding memberships in prestigious organizations such as BAFTA, the London Film Critics’ Circle, and the European Film Academy.

Halligan’s Vision for the Future

Reflecting on her new role, Fionnuala Halligan stated: “Joining the Red Sea Film Foundation is a true privilege. As I wrap up my time at Screen, I eagerly anticipate diving into this new position after the Cannes Film Festival and collaborating closely with the team to further develop and expand our international programming.”

Support from Leadership

Shivani Pandya-Malhotra, Managing Director of the Red Sea Film Foundation, expressed her enthusiasm: “Finn has been a collaborator and supporter from the outset. Her impeccable taste and profound appreciation for global cinema, especially from Asia—a region we are increasingly championing—make her the perfect fit to lead our international programming. We are thrilled to have her on board as we continue to elevate our festival’s global presence.”

Looking Ahead

Now in its fifth edition, the Red Sea International Film Festival has showcased over 520 films from 85 countries, including more than 130 Saudi titles. The next edition is scheduled for December 4 to 13, 2025, in the historic Al Balad district of Jeddah.
