Extended Application Window for the 2025 Feature Script Lab

The Doha Film Institute (DFI) has announced an extended application deadline for its 2025 Feature Script Lab. Applications are now due by June 1, 2025.

Program Overview

This six-month program is designed to nurture emerging screenwriters and writer-directors working on original feature-length screenplays. Participants will benefit from intensive mentorship, peer collaboration, and structured script development.

Session Details

The lab consists of three five-day online sessions scheduled for July 10–15, September 25–30, and December 10–15, 2025. Participants will engage in group discussions and one-on-one tutorials with experienced mentors, receiving valuable feedback on character arcs, story structure, and thematic clarity. This collaborative environment encourages participants to immerse themselves in each other’s work, meet strict deadlines, and complete assignments aimed at developing a fully realized screenplay.

Selection Criteria

Selection for the program hinges on the strength of a candidate’s screenplay idea, writing ability, and artistic vision, alongside a review of their previous creative work. Shortlisted applicants will undergo a selection process that evaluates their potential to craft a personal and impactful story. The lab particularly emphasizes projects that reflect contemporary Middle Eastern life and encourages participants to explore various budget scales, including micro-budget filmmaking.

Program Structure

The program kicks off with pitching and feedback in Session 1, followed by scene-by-scene breakdowns, character and theme development, and ongoing script revisions. Session 2 focuses on advancing projects through new drafts, visual research, and pitch refinement. Finally, Session 3 wraps up with a comprehensive review of first drafts, a final group feedback session, and a pitch presentation to an external panel.

Commitment and Fees

Participants are required to attend all three sessions in full, with each day dedicated to intensive development work. The lab will be conducted in English, accommodates eight participants, and is specifically designed for intermediate to advanced-level filmmakers. The total fee for the lab is 1,800 Qatari Riyals.

Application Requirements

Applicants must submit a synopsis, treatment, script samples (if available), resume, visual materials, and a personal statement. Priority will be given to applicants from Qatar, the MENA region, the diaspora, and DFI grantees, although filmmakers from emerging regions are also encouraged to apply.
