Currently, ON TV operates five channels, supported by a robust and fully redundant 5+5 configuration that includes both main and backup servers, master control switchers, and graphics engines.
Pebble, a leader in automation, content management, and integrated channel solutions, has successfully transitioned ON TV, one of Egypt’s leading independent broadcasters, to its cutting-edge enterprise automation platform. This intricate project, designed to boost resilience, scalability, and flexibility, was carried out in partnership with Cairo-based systems integrator, Systems Design.
Having relied on Pebble automation for many years, ON TV now operates five channels. As the broadcaster expanded, its original Pebble Neptune system continued to handle playout operations. To ensure their infrastructure is future-ready, ON TV chose Pebble’s most advanced automation software, representing a significant technological advancement while preserving its existing server network and master control setup.
A key challenge was to execute the transition without interrupting broadcasts. To accomplish this, Pebble and Systems Design developed a detailed migration plan that involved testing and commissioning the new software on backup hardware. This approach allowed for a gradual, channel-by-channel switchover with zero on-air disruptions.
The broadcaster’s current playout environment features a fully redundant 5+5 setup, which includes main and backup servers, master control switchers, and graphics engines. All five channels are managed through a single router that needed to operate simultaneously with both the legacy and new Pebble automation systems during the transition, adding a layer of complexity that was expertly managed.
Given the nature of ON TV’s programming, which encompasses both scheduled content and live events, the system’s capability to support flexible, on-the-fly changes was crucial. Pebble’s Auto Resume function allows operators to break from a scheduled program to insert a live feed or alternative segment, then return seamlessly to the original timeline—either from the point of departure or from the current time.
Furthermore, live events are recorded in real-time on the same server network, entirely managed by the new Pebble platform. This includes both pre-scheduled recordings and crash recording capabilities accessible from any operator console, enhancing responsiveness and operational control.
Ahmed Saber, Technical Director of ON TV, remarked: “We have evolved from a single channel to becoming a major independent voice in Egyptian television. From the very beginning, we have relied on Pebble’s robust and dependable software to manage our workflows, and we had complete confidence in returning to them for the next phase of our growth. The new Pebble automation platform not only future-proofs us against upcoming challenges but also, thanks to the local engineering team and Systems Design, was installed and switched over without any interruptions—a remarkable achievement.”
Samir Isbaih, Pebble VP of Sales for the Middle East and APAC, added: “I was the engineer who installed the original system all those years ago, and it’s truly rewarding to see ON TV grow into one of the largest and most successful television networks in Egypt. I am thrilled and proud to continue this partnership through this project and to implement the next generation of automation. With Pebble, MENA customers can expect a high level of reliability and the exceptional support they deserve.”
