Cue the Nerf Herder Guitar Riff: A Buffy the Vampire Slayer Reboot is Coming!

Exciting news for fans and industry insiders alike: Hulu is in the process of developing a follow-up to the beloved cult classic, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, with original star Sarah Michelle Gellar on board. This new project, crafted by talented writers Nora and Lilla Zuckerman (known for Poker Face and Fringe), is being produced by 20th Television and is touted as “the next chapter in the Buffyverse.” Notably, Chloé Zhao, an Oscar-winning director recognized for Nomadland and Eternals, is set to helm the project.

While Hulu and 20th TV have opted not to comment on the project, sources indicate that this new iteration of Buffy will center around a younger Slayer, with Gellar’s iconic character, Buffy Summers, taking a backseat. Although the original series established that only one Slayer could exist at a time, the final season introduced the concept of multiple potential Slayers, paving the way for this fresh narrative direction.

Gellar, currently starring in Showtime’s Dexter: Original Sin, previously expressed reluctance towards a Buffy reboot. However, during a December appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show, she revealed a shift in her perspective: “I always used to say no, because it’s in its bubble, and it’s so perfect. But watching Sex and the City [sequel And Just Like That] and seeing Dexter, and realizing there are ways to do it, definitely does get your mind thinking, ‘Well, maybe.’”

This Hulu project marks the second attempt at a Buffy reboot from 20th TV in recent years. Back in 2018, the studio collaborated with writer Monica Owusu-Breen and series creator Joss Whedon on a reboot, but it never progressed beyond the development stage. It’s worth noting that Whedon, who has faced allegations of mistreatment towards actors on Buffy, its spinoff Angel, and the Justice League film, is not involved in the Hulu project.

The Zuckerman sisters will serve as executive producers for the Buffy reboot alongside Zhao, Gellar, and the original show’s executive producers Gail Berman, Fran and Kaz Kuzui of Suite B, and Dolly Parton via Sandollar. While Parton wasn’t credited as an executive producer on the original series, which aired from 1997 to 2003, her production company was one of its key contributors.

For those interested in the business side, the Zuckermans are represented by UTA and Lichter Grossman, while Zhao is represented by CAA, Lichter Grossman, and Ilene Feldman Management. Gellar is with CAA, Linden Entertainment, and Yorn Levine. Berman and her company, The Jackal Group, are represented by Sam Fischer at Ziffren Brittenham.
