The BURANO Version 2.0 firmware update will introduce new recording modes, enhanced SDI output support, proxy recording, and much more.

Sony Electronics has revealed exciting details about the upcoming BURANO Version 2.0 firmware update, scheduled for release in March 2025. This update promises a range of innovative features and performance improvements, all designed with input from users to enhance the BURANO camera’s versatility for filmmakers.

Key enhancements include new recording formats, such as a 3.8K Full Frame crop mode that can achieve up to 120 fps, and a 1.9K mode supporting up to 240 fps. These options provide filmmakers with flexible high-speed recording capabilities tailored to various production needs. Additionally, the update introduces a 1.8x de-squeeze setting for anamorphic lenses, expanded high frame rate (S&Q) modes, and proxy recording for 24.00 fps formats.

The BURANO Version 2.0 update also enhances monitoring and metadata functionalities, featuring standardized SDI video output for X-OCN and XAVC, breathing compensation, image stabilization metadata in X-OCN, and added time code and clip name metadata to SDI output. Users will appreciate the improved on-screen display, which provides clearer camera status information outside the image frame, along with support for View Finder Gamma Display Assist in S-Log3 monitoring.

New features include a PL Mount Voltage menu (10V to 24V), compatibility with Focus/Iris/Zoom control for PL Mount lenses using the optional GP-VR100 handgrip, and enhanced image output when utilizing preset S-Log3 looks or 3D User LUTs. Auto Focus performance will also see improvements for frame rates of 23.98, 24, 25, and 29.97.

Additional upgrades encompass exposure tools (High/Low Key) derived from the VENICE camera system, an increase in white balance presets (from 3 to 8), and support for Active/High Image Stabilization in Full-Frame crop 6K and Super 35 1.9K modes. User-friendly enhancements, such as media formatting directly from the status screen and standardized CAM ID and Reel Number settings, aim to streamline workflows for documentary and reality TV productions.

The firmware also enhances live event and multicam capabilities, including variable ND control from RCPs, improved camera control via the Camera Remote SDK, and tally control for LAN-connected devices.

Finally, BURANO Version 2.0 will change the default frequency setting from 59.94 to 23.98p and introduce a “reset to factory defaults” option. Filmmakers will be able to download the firmware update directly to their cameras via Mac or PC upon its release in March 2025.
