Derek Chang Appointed President and CEO of Liberty Media Organization
Derek Chang has been named the new president and chief executive officer of the Liberty Media Organization.
Chang has served as a director at Liberty Media since March 2021 and has held significant leadership positions at various companies, including EverPass Media, the NBA, DirecTV, Scripps, Charter, and TCI. He succeeds Greg Maffei, who will step down from the position at the end of 2024.
Chang will officially assume his new role on February 1, 2025, with John Malone, the chairman of Liberty Media, acting as interim CEO until that date.
“I am excited to welcome Derek as the CEO of Liberty Media. His extensive experience in operational and investment roles, deep understanding of our industries, and familiarity with Liberty make him the perfect leader for the next phase of our organization,” stated John Malone, Chairman of Liberty Media. “Having worked with Derek for over 25 years, I am continually impressed by his leadership approach, wide-ranging expertise, and global outlook. I look forward to supporting him and the Liberty management team in enhancing shareholder value.”
Most recently, Chang served as the executive chairman of EverPass Media, a joint venture he co-founded with Alex Kaplan in collaboration with the NFL and RedBird Capital Partners. He will resign from his role as executive chairman but will remain on the board of EverPass Media as he transitions to Liberty Media.
From 2018 to 2020, Chang was the CEO of NBA China and held various leadership roles at Scripps Network Interactive from 2013 to 2018, including overseeing international lifestyle channels. Prior to that, he was the EVP of content strategy and development at DIRECTV and served as EVP of finance & strategy and interim co-CFO at Charter Communications.
Chang holds an MBA from Stanford University and a bachelor’s degree in history from Yale University.
He will join the executive committee of the Liberty Media Board alongside Malone, Vice Chairman Dob Bennett, and Chase Carey. Additionally, Stefano Domenicali, president & CEO of Formula 1, will report to a committee of the Liberty Media board that includes Bennett, Carey, and Chang.
“I have had the privilege of collaborating with John Malone and the Liberty team for many years during my tenure at TCI and DIRECTV, and later as a board member of Starz and Liberty. I have always admired their history of creating value for investors and partners,” Chang remarked. “Our immediate focus is clear: optimizing the portfolio structure with the split-off of Liberty Live and fostering the growth of our valuable operating assets, including F1 and MotoGP post-acquisition, to sustain their momentum and invest for the future. Looking ahead, Liberty has consistently maintained a long-term investment strategy while remaining agile to seize new opportunities. Both of these principles will continue to guide our strategy moving forward.”
