CBS Sports anchor and commentator Greg Gumbel has passed away at the age of 78 after a battle with cancer.
His family confirmed the news in a statement to CBS News.

He died peacefully, surrounded by love, after a brave fight against cancer,” stated his wife Marcy and daughter Michelle. “Greg faced his illness with the same stoicism, grace, and positivity that defined his life. Born in Louisiana, Gumbel, a Loras College graduate, began his career in sportscasting in the 1970s after his brother Bryant informed him of an opening at the NBC O&O station in Chicago, where he worked for seven years.

He later joined ESPN, anchoring SportsCenter and providing play-by-play for NBA games. Gumbel also covered Yankee games for MSG and hosted the first radio morning show on WFAN in New York City.
In 1988, he joined CBS as a part-time NFL announcer, later expanding his role to include college basketball and The NFL Today. He contributed to CBS’ coverage of MLB, college football, the NCAA Tournament, the Daytona 500, and Pepsi 400, among others.
Gumbel left CBS Sports in 1994 to work as a sports anchor for NBC Sports but returned to CBS four years later.
In 2022, he marked his 50th year in broadcasting.
