AlUla Creates Mentors with Film Programme Winners
The AlUla Creates program provided comprehensive support to participants throughout the production process, covering everything from scriptwriting and budgeting to directing and visual character development, including costume design.
At the Red Sea International Film Festival 2024, AlUla Creates presented the outcomes of its inaugural cohort, which produced three short films screened during the festival held from December 5 to 14, 2024, in Jeddah. The films included Malika, When the Shelves Hymn, and the animated piece A Mosquito.
Funded by Film AlUla, the Royal Commission for AlUla’s film agency, this initiative aims to foster the talents of female filmmakers and fashion designers in Saudi Arabia. The first cycle attracted numerous applications, from which a select few participants were chosen and paired with mentors such as Haifaa Al Mansour, James Richardson, Jane Moore from Vertigo Films, and Roua Almadani from Film AlUla.
Mahsa Motamedi, marketing director of Film AlUla, expressed enthusiasm about the program’s first cycle, stating, “We’re very excited to be completing the first cycle of AlUla Creates. We’re here to nurture and celebrate creativity and empower women in this region. I think we’ve been successful at that by showcasing how the participants made these short films on an international platform.”
One of the highlighted films, Malika, directed by Maram Taibah, draws inspiration from Alice in Wonderland and Arabian Nights. It narrates the journey of Salma, a girl on a quest to recover her grandmother’s lost crown to restore her health.
The program facilitated participants at every production stage, including scriptwriting, budgeting, directing, and visual character development. For example, the costumes for Malika were designed by Atelier Hekayat, a fashion house established by Alia and Abeer Oraif, who were also participants in AlUla Creates. The costumes for When the Shelves Hymn were crafted by Arwa Al Ammari of the ArAm label, another participant in the program.
All three films have secured distribution agreements, ensuring they will reach a broader audience soon.
