The Writers Guild of America is close to issuing a directive for its writers to cease work with Village Roadshow, alleging that the company has fallen behind on its payments to them.

A spokesperson from the WGA confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter, “They are indeed late in compensating their writers, and a stop-work order is on the horizon.” A representative from Village Roadshow, known for its work on the Ocean’s franchise, Mad Max: Fury Road, and The Lego Movie, refrained from commenting. Variety was the first to report on the WGA’s potential actions.

In light of the ongoing contraction in Hollywood, Village Roadshow has been cutting costs, recently implementing layoffs that affected roles in business affairs, administration, and film and television. During this period, the company considered various strategic options, including attracting additional investors. Since 2017, Vine Alternative Investments has held a controlling interest in Village Roadshow.

This year, the Village Roadshow Entertainment Group established a first-look development agreement with Kevin Garnett’s production company, Content Cartel. They also announced several notable projects, including an adaptation of Pam Grier’s memoir, “Foxy: My Life in Three Acts,” a scripted series based on the University of Idaho murders, and a docuseries about the life of Teamsters leader Jimmy Hoffa.

Projects with former close partner Warner Bros. have been noticeably absent. Since 2022, Village Roadshow has been involved in arbitration with the long-established studio following a lawsuit related to the simultaneous release of 2021’s “The Matrix Resurrections.” The group has also alleged that Warner Bros. excluded it from significant financial involvement in sequels and remakes of titles such as “Sherlock Holmes” and “Ready Player One.”
