Idris Elba is preparing to lend his talents to the Masters of the Universe project for Amazon MGM Studios.
Elba is in the final stages of negotiations to portray Duncan, also known as Man-at-Arms, in the live-action adaptation of the beloved Mattel toy franchise. The film will be directed by Travis Knight, with Nicholas Galitzine starring as He-Man, alongside Camila Mendes as Teela and Alison Brie as Evil Lyn.
The Masters of the Universe film is set to be released in theaters on June 5, 2026, and is produced by Escape Artists and Mattel Films.
Knight is directing from a screenplay written by Chris Butler, which is based on an initial draft by David Callaham, Aaron Nee, and Adam Nee.
The Masters of the Universe franchise was launched by Mattel with a series of action figures that first appeared in 1982. The following year, the animated series He-Man and the Masters of the Universe debuted in syndication, leading to video games and various merchandise.
Elba is set to reprise his voice role as Knuckles in Paramount Pictures’ Sonic the Hedgehog 3, which is scheduled for release next month, and he also voices the character in the Paramount+ series Knuckles. His upcoming projects include the Amazon MGM Studios action-comedy Heads of State, featuring John Cena and Priyanka Chopra Jonas.
Elba’s previous film credits include notable titles such as Pacific Rim, Fast & Furious: Hobbs & Shaw, The Suicide Squad, and Beast, as well as the series The Office, Luther, and Hijack. He has also portrayed Heimdall in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Elba is represented by Artist Partnership, Johnson Shapiro Slewett & Kole, and the Lede Company.
The Wrap was the first to report on Elba’s participation in Masters of the Universe.
