Amazon is putting an additional $4 billion into the generative AI company Anthropic as it continues to invest heavily in artificial intelligence technology.

The technology powerhouse, which also owns Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, announced on Friday that the partnership will designate Anthropic as Amazon’s AWS division’s “primary training partner” and will utilize AWS Trainium for training and deploying its most extensive foundational models.

This investment will also provide AWS customers with certain advantages, such as the opportunity to fine-tune their data. This “customization benefit” will be exclusive to AWS customers for a limited time on new Claude models, as stated by the company.

Anthropic is known for Claude, one of the most popular AI models available, alongside competitors like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Meta’s Llama. Just six months ago, Amazon had already invested $2.75 billion in Anthropic.

The two companies have also highlighted several clients utilizing Anthropic models with AWS, including the PGA Tour, Perplexity, T-Mobile, and numerous others.

The growth of generative AI has sparked controversy, prompting tech companies to engage in lobbying efforts to defend the legality of using copyrighted material to train AI models. Anthropic is currently facing a lawsuit from authors claiming the company “usurped a licensing market for copyright owners” by downloading their works without proper compensation.

Additionally, Amazon has been swiftly introducing AI-driven products, having recently rolled out AI-generated recaps for Prime Video.

“The feedback from AWS customers developing generative AI applications powered by Anthropic in Amazon Bedrock has been exceptional,” remarked Matt Garman, AWS CEO. “By continuing to implement Anthropic models in Amazon Bedrock and collaborating with Anthropic on the development of our custom Trainium chips, we aim to further expand what customers can achieve with generative AI technologies. We have been impressed by Anthropic’s rapid innovation and commitment to responsible generative AI development and look forward to enhancing our partnership.”

“This year has shown significant growth for Claude, and our partnership with Amazon has been crucial in delivering Claude’s capabilities to millions of end users across tens of thousands of customers on Amazon Bedrock,” stated Dario Amodei, co-founder and CEO of Anthropic. “We are excited to collaborate with Amazon to train and power our most advanced AI models using AWS Trainium and to fully unlock the potential of their technology.”
