The European Film Academy has revealed the nominees for key categories in the 37th European Film Awards, set to take place in Lucerne, Switzerland, on December 7.
Leading the nominations are French Oscar contender Emilia Pérez by Jacques Audiard and The Room Next Door by Pedro Almodóvar, with each film nominated in four categories. They are both in the running for Best European Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Best Actress, with Karla Sofia Gascón nominated for Emilia Pérez and Tilda Swinton for The Room Next Door.
Other notable nominees include Germany’s Oscar selection, The Seed of the Sacred Fig by Iranian director Mohammad Rasoulof, which received nominations for Best Film, Best Director, and Best Screenplay.

Several films received two nominations, including Maura Delpero’s Italian Oscar entry Vermiglio, Halfdan Ullmann Tondel’s Norwegian Oscar entry Armand, Andrea Arnold’s Bird, and Coralie Fargeat’s The Substance.
For the first time this year, films nominated for Best European Documentary and Best Animated Feature Film are also eligible for Best European Film, leading to a broader nominations list. Notable entries include Bye Bye Tiberias by Lina Soualem, Dahomey by Mati Diop, and Soundtrack To A Coup d’Etat by Johan Grimonprez.
Animated contenders include Flow by Gints Zilbalodis and Sultan’s Dream by Isabel Herguera.
The awards are determined by approximately 5,000 members of the Berlin-based European Film Academy and are considered indicators for which European films may gain traction in the U.S. awards season.
Last year’s Best European Film winner, Anatomy of a Fall, received five Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Actress for Sandra Hüller, with director Justine Triet and co-writer Arthur Harari winning for Best Screenplay.
This year’s ceremony in Lucerne will be the last held in December, as future editions will shift to mid-January starting with the 39th edition in 2026, to better align with the overall awards season.
Craft category awards, such as Best European Cinematography and Editing, are selected by a specialized jury from the films in the main Academy selection.
The EFA previously announced nominations for the European Animated Film category in October.
