Robin Wright Defends Jenny in ‘Forrest Gump’ Against Anti-Feminist Claims: ‘She’s Not a Voldemort to Forrest’

Robin Wright recently joined her “Forrest Gump” co-star Tom Hanks for an interview with The New York Times to promote their new project, Robert Zemeckis’ “Here.” During the conversation, she addressed accusations that her character, Jenny Curran, is portrayed as “kind of an anti-feminist role.” In the film, Jenny is the love interest of Forrest, but her free-spirited lifestyle creates distance between them. She engages in social liberation, drug use, and more, ultimately dying from an AIDS-related illness. Some viewers interpret this as an anti-feminist consequence for her choices.

“There are various interpretations of Jenny, Robin’s character, including the idea that she faced consequences for her choices—choices that mirror those of many young women in a generation experiencing newfound social and economic freedom,” interviewer Melena Ryzik posed to Wright. “She leads a carefree life and ultimately dies. Some perceive this as an anti-feminist narrative. What are your thoughts?”

“No! That’s not the case,” Wright replied. “Some people liken her to Voldemort in relation to Forrest. I wouldn’t use that reference, but she was somewhat selfish. I don’t see her getting AIDS as a punishment. Her promiscuity reflects her selfishness towards Forrest, who loved her from the start. She was erratic, using drugs and engaging with a Black Panther, and then she falls ill, saying, ‘This is your child. But I’m dying.’ Yet, he still offers to care for her: ‘I’ll take care of you at Mama’s house.’ It’s truly a beautiful love story.”

Earlier in the interview, Wright expressed her sentimental attachment to “Forrest Gump,” stating, “It’s a film I will always cherish, not just because it’s a remarkable movie, but also due to the wonderful experience of working with these individuals.”

Hanks added, “It is an extraordinary amalgamation that stands alone and does not require a sequel. Thank goodness we never attempted to make another one. Why put a hat on a hat?”

Released in the summer of 1994, “Forrest Gump” grossed $678 million worldwide, becoming the second highest-grossing film of the year. It won six Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Hanks. In 2011, the Library of Congress selected the film for preservation in the United States National Film Registry.
