Uncork’d Entertainment has acquired the North American distribution rights for Kurt Martin’s psychological horror film The Room Below, scheduled for release later this year.
The film stars Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Alyssa Sutherland and follows Mia, a pregnant children’s book author who begins to experience disturbing events in her home. The story deepens when a boy resembling her deceased son goes missing, prompting a retired detective to investigate. As Mia’s grief grows, her behavior becomes increasingly unpredictable, adding to the mystery.
Shot in Sydney, the cast also includes Gilbert Bradman, Goran D Kleut, Lauren Grimson, Tristian McKinnon, and Bobby Gilchrist.
The Room Below is produced by Lunar Pictures in partnership with Valecroft, Tetrad Studios, Head Gear Films, CME, and MIK Studios. The production team features Jim Robison for Lunar Pictures, Chris Chard for CME, and Ty Linegar for MIK Studio. Executive producers include Marc Furmie, William Ramsey, Colin Bates, Adam Callen, Samuel Levine, Roy Scott Macfarland, Clement Dunn, Emma Comley, and actress Jaime King. Alexandra Taussig served as producer consultant.
The distribution agreement was facilitated by Blacktop International, which presented the film to buyers at the American Film Market (AFM) in November. The company is currently working on additional international sales at the European Film Market (EFM).
JD Beaufils, President of Blacktop International, commented, “The Room Below has quickly attracted buyers interested in high-concept horror with a strong cast. The momentum from AFM has continued into EFM. Uncork’d is a perfect partner for the North American release, and we are excited about the film’s growing international interest.”
Keith Leopard of Uncork’d Entertainment added, “The Room Below is a gripping, atmospheric thriller that stands out in the psychological horror genre. Its compelling cast and suspenseful story will resonate with audiences.”
This is Martin’s second feature film following his AACTA-nominated debut, Moon Rock for Monday. Martin and Robison expressed their enthusiasm about the North American release, stating, “The response since AFM has been very encouraging, and the continued sales at EFM highlight the strong demand for elevated, cast-driven horror in the market.”
Uncork’d Entertainment plans to release The Room Below in North America in the third quarter of 2024. Monster Pictures holds the rights for Australia and New Zealand.
Lunar Pictures, based in Byron Bay, is also producing Switzerland, directed by Anton Corbijn and starring Helen Mirren, Alden Ehrenreich, and Olivia Cooke, in partnership with Brouhaha Entertainment.
