France Télévisions Considers Selling Part of Sports Broadcasting Rights to Cut Costs

France Télévisions, the French public broadcasting group, is preparing to resell some of its sports broadcasting rights as it faces a required cost reduction of €150 million by 2026.

The group plans to offer part of its rights to the Six Nations Rugby Tournament and the French Football Cup (Coupe de France) to other broadcasters. Major sporting events such as the Roland-Garros tennis tournament and the Tour de France will remain with France Télévisions and are not affected by these changes. Rugby is expected to be the first sport impacted by the new financial strategy.

France Télévisions had previously secured the Six Nations rights through 2029 for €30 million. TF1 is among the main broadcasters interested in acquiring the rights to matches featuring the French national rugby team. In 2024, matches involving the XV de France attracted an average of 7.3 million viewers and achieved a 45.7% audience share.

For football, France Télévisions has co-broadcast the Coupe de France with BEIN Sports since the 2022-2023 season. The broadcaster may choose to give up part of its rights as early as the next tournament. The French Football League is expected to open a new bidding process for future seasons. While France Télévisions does not plan to drop the event entirely, it aims to focus on a smaller package of matches. Currently, the group pays €8 million per season, covering two-thirds of the total rights cost.
