Sixty-one employees at Ubisoft Halifax have officially unionized, joining the Game & Media Workers Guild of Canada, Local 30111. The union certification was approved by the Nova Scotia Labor Board on December 18.
Workers at the studio first announced their intention to unionize in June. While the company initially challenged some of these efforts, the matter was resolved after several hearings, leading to a vote in December. According to lead programmer Jon Huffman, 73.8% of eligible employees voted in favor of unionizing, with full participation from all eligible voters. Huffman described the turnout as “really strong” and said it was “a clear response from the membership.”
This marks the first union at a Ubisoft studio in North America. Founded in 2010 and rebranded as Ubisoft Halifax in 2015, the studio is recognized for its work on mobile games such as Assassin’s Creed Rebellion and Rainbow Six Mobile.
Reflecting on the process, Huffman stated, “Even though it’s taken this long to certify, we’re still dedicated to doing this with Ubisoft. We love where we work, we love who we work with. We’re in this for the long haul.”
Unionization has been a significant trend in the industry throughout 2025, with recent surveys indicating strong support among game developers for unions and the protections they offer.
