Canal Sur, the public broadcaster serving Andalusia, Spain, has completed a comprehensive technology upgrade using Pebble’s software-defined Integrated Channel playout engines. This update replaces the broadcaster’s previous Pebble automation system, which had been in operation since 2011.

Canal Sur manages a range of regional channels across various platforms and oversees local programming for seven cities within Andalusia. With its existing automation platform approaching the end of its lifecycle, the Canal Sur team reassessed their operational needs. In collaboration with Datos Media, Pebble’s systems integration partner in Spain, they outlined requirements to ensure long-term sustainability.

The broadcaster chose an architecture centered on Pebble’s Integrated Channel playout engines, known for their resilience and ability to support multiple outputs per device. This approach enabled Canal Sur to implement a high-performance system within a compact setup.

The latest version of Pebble’s Automation software now manages Canal Sur’s playout and asset management, as well as ingest, automated quality control, file transfers, and graphics. The system also supports distribution to new media platforms, including Movistar and YouTube.

Pedro Espina, Chief Technology Officer at Canal Sur, commented, “The nature of broadcast has changed completely since we first installed Pebble automation 14 years ago. We wanted to achieve greater operational flexibility for multiple channels and regional opt-outs, while maintaining absolute reliability. Our longstanding relationship with Pebble gave us confidence in their ability to deliver a compact and efficient solution that meets all our expectations.”
