Foundry has released Mari 7.5, the latest version of its advanced paint toolset designed for artists working with large, high-resolution assets. This update introduces a new multi-paint feature, along with several improvements to existing paint tools, aiming to boost efficiency and give artists greater flexibility in creating detailed textures.

With the new multi-paint capability, artists can now paint on up to eight different streams at once, allowing them to focus more on intricate details. Charli Holt, product manager for Mari, noted that multi-paint has been the most requested feature and is expected to help artists spend more time on creative work.

The development of multi-paint was a collaborative effort between Foundry and Wētā FX. The feature originated from a joint project and is already in use by Wētā FX artists. Kimball Thurston, CTO of Wētā FX, highlighted that this new capability changes how artists work and supports the studio’s high-quality output on major projects planned for 2025.

Mari 7.5 continues to support workflows popular with visual effects professionals, including UDIM (a system for managing complex textures in 3D painting), non-destructive layer and node graph systems for procedural work, and compatibility with industry-standard formats such as FBX, OBJ, Alembic, OpenEXR, and USD. The software can also handle models with over one million polygons in a single topology.

  • Multi-paint node: Paint or project images on up to eight streams at once using any Mari paint tool, with the ability to adjust paint before finalizing.
  • New texture transfer system: Uses Mari’s Bakery map-baking engine to streamline texture iterations and reduce manual work.
  • Expanded asset library: Adds three new animal maps, 54 new skins from Texturing XYZ, and new brushes by Bradford deCaussin for more creative options.
  • Intuitive enhancements: Updates to autosave, backups, and crash reporting improve the overall user experience.

Mari 7.5 is now available as a free download for customers with an active subscription. Solo artists can access the new features with a Mari Individual license, which is currently offered at a 50% discount for new subscribers for a limited time (terms and conditions apply).
