Better Man and The Narrow Road to the Deep North were the standout winners at the Australian Screen Sound Guild (ASSG) Awards, held last Saturday at The Ritz Cinema in Sydney. Both projects received multiple awards, with Better Man earning Best Sound in a Feature Film and Best Music Production, while The Narrow Road to the Deep North took home Best Sound in a Television Series and Best Production Sound.

The event presented a total of 16 awards, recognizing achievements across film, television, documentaries, commercials, interactive media, children’s and animation, and short-form content. The award for Best Sound for Interactive or Immersive Entertainment returned this year and was awarded to the documentary The Giants.

Due to an increase in children’s and animation entries, the committee introduced a separate category for Best Sound for an Animated Feature Film, which was won by Memoir of a Snail. Other notable winners included Yurlu | Country for Best Sound in a Documentary and The Way, My Way for Best Sound for an Independent Feature Film. Bring Her Back received the Best Sound Editing award, and The Order was recognized for Best Sound Mixing.

The Syd Butterworth Lifetime Achievement Award was shared by Stephen and Diana Smith of Tracks, and the late Oscar-nominated sound recordist Paul ‘Salty’ Brincat, who passed away in June.
