Thomas Duncan-Watt, a writer recognized with the John Hinde Award, is moving forward with his new drama project, The Nightmover, after securing development funding from Screen NSW.
The series centers on Laurie Pearce, a 54-year-old who, in an effort to keep her struggling women’s shelter open, launches a ‘Night Moving’ business. This service, inspired by a similar profession in Japan, helps people disappear from their current lives for a fee, operating in a legal gray area.
After developing the pilot script during the 2024 edition of The Creators, a program run by Screen Australia and the Australian Writers’ Guild, Duncan-Watt partnered with Sydney-based production company Thumper Pictures. The collaboration began after last year’s Content London event, where Duncan-Watt’s pitch caught the attention of head of development Charlie Garber and producer Morgan Hind.
The creative team has since expanded to include experienced showrunner Alexa Wyatt (Last King of the Cross), award-winning journalist Jess Hill (See What You Made Me Do), and writer/director Dee Dogan (Here Out West).
Garber shared his enthusiasm for the project, describing The Nightmover as a compelling procedural drama that explores complex and often hidden aspects of Australian society. He praised Duncan-Watt’s vision and expressed excitement about working with the assembled team of writers.
Duncan-Watt is represented in Australia by Sharne McGee at Liberty Artist Management.
