Werner Film Productions, a division of BBC Studios, has produced the new series Goolagong, which tells the story of tennis champion Evonne Goolagong Cawley. Lila McGuire stars as the Wiradjuri woman who grew up in Barellan, New South Wales during the 1950s and 60s, before rising to prominence in women’s tennis in the 1970s and winning 14 Grand Slam titles—seven in singles and seven in doubles.

Marton Csokas plays Vic Edwards, the coach who discovered Goolagong’s talent early on and whom she later accused of making unwanted advances. The cast also features Felix Mallard as Roger Cawley, the former junior British tennis player whom Goolagong married in 1975, and Luke Carroll as her father, Kenny Goolagong.

The series is directed by Wayne Blair and written by Steven McGregor and Megan Simpson Huberman, with Ruth Underwood as script producer. Joanna Werner serves as producer and executive producer, alongside Stuart Menzies, Brett Sleigh, and Rachel Okine from ABC, with Danielle MacLean as co-producer. Evonne Goolagong Cawley and Roger Cawley are associate producers.

BBC Studios is managing global sales for the series. Goolagong received funding support from the Victorian Government through VicScreen’s Victorian Production Fund and the Victorian Screen Rebate, as well as major production investment from Screen Australia.

The series will premiere on Sunday, January 4 at 8:20 pm on ABC TV, with all episodes available for streaming on ABC iview.
